This led to the demolition of the houses on the site in the mid-1980s and, pending the definitive remediation work, the site was sealed with a layer of material. The Zelling Area Redevelopment Association instructed the Boskalis Heijmans Zelling Area Redevelopment Consortium to conduct soil remediation and redevelopment work in the Zelling area of Gouderak (Netherlands). The consortium is cleaning up the dumped layer and the surrounding waterbed in the Hollandsche IJssel since february 2008. Once the remediation work is completed, the consortium will complete the nature development in the ‘Middelblok’ section of the river to the east. A tourist harbour and housing will be built in what is now the shallow section of the river. The project is unique because of the history, the contract form (Design & Construct), and the integrated approach to soil and waterbed remediation in combination with housing construction and nature development (brownfield development)
