During the last months the email addresses of the employees of the University of Antwerp are regularly inundated with spam and phishing mails, and we must acknowledge that there are still a few employees each that respond to these emails. This has serious consequences for the entire university:
- Because the senders of the original phishing email that someone has replied to, they will be more likely to send more phishing mails to our mail domain
- The online reputation of the university is strong affected.
- All employees can thus get problems with sending emails, as we will regularly called on Blacklists. This will mails sent from the university for 48 hours is no longer acceptable.
- The user loses all messages in his / her mailbox, and incoming mails are deleted immediately, so these to be recovered anymore. On Pintra (link to information about phishing emails) are some tips to identify such phishing emails, but 99% of phishing emails are easy to unmask by moving the mouse pointer over the link in the email and the URL that appears as available: when it refers to a site on which to insert your data (account or bank details) and it starts with http: // instead of the secure https: //, you can already go from there that the site has been forged and that there is certainly nothing must be completed. And if in doubt you should first can ask the helpdesk for confirmation. Prevention is better than cure…
